Art through Fashion: Frida / L'Arte attraverso la Moda: Frida

Che aspetto avrebbe avuto Frida Kahlo, l'artista messicana vissuta nella prima metà del Novecento, oggi? Come si sarebbe evoluto il suo stile iconico? Quali accessori avrebbe scelto di indossare? Grazie a Diletta (e a Rossano, che ci ha concesso di utilizzare questa fantastica location umbra), ho provato a immaginare una risposta alle domande di cui sopra attraverso quattro diversi outfit liberamente ispirati alla figura e alle opere di Frida Kahlo.

LONG LIVE McQUEEN

When Isabella Blow, in 1992, discovered the graduation collection (named “Jack the Ripper”) of an unknown designer, she probably already knew Lee Alexander McQueen was a genius. A kind of genius that only comes around once in a generation.

In 1994, after several years of work with Romeo Gigli, he launched his eponymous fashion label.

When, in 1996, he was appointed to head designer replacing John Galliano and he designed his first collection for Givenchy, Karl Lagerfeld suggested that McQueen was closer in spirit to shock artist Damien Hirst than Hubert de Givenchy. Though McQueen was not just a great artisan with a wide knowledge of bespoke British tailoring, but also an extraordinary designer and a real artist.

The Fashion Bad Boy was often accused of misogyny or attacked for producing unwearable fashions and unorthodox runway shows. But McQueen was not a book you can judge by its cover: he was able to read the darkest part of human nature, the deepest recesses of soul and to translate them in romantic but aggressive, exceptional and cutting-edge garments.

In 1998 he became Dazed&Confused director and he shocked the whole world publishing an editorial made with the collaboration of Nick Knight and featuring disable models, such as the athlete Aimee Mullens.

In December 2000 the Gucci Group acquired 51% of Alexander McQueen fashion label and soon he opened flagship boutiques in NY, London and Milan. He was named British Designer of the Year four times: in 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003. Again in 2003 he was honoured as Most Excellent Commander of The British Empire of Fashion CBE by her Majesty the Queen.

McQueen remanipulated the macabre into a thing of true exquisite beauty. He kept his art pieces transcending any trend all through his career. He pushed the boundary between runway shows and installation art surrounding his presentations with near pyrotechnic-level of theatrics. He became one of the world most influential designers.

He died two years ago. But he will always be in our hearts.
